Under the overall trend of the global PCB industry transferring to Asia, as a major electronics manufacturing country, China has attracted a large number of foreign capital and local PCB enterprises to invest with a huge domestic demand market and relatively low production costs, promoting the explosive growth of the domestic PCB industry in just a few years. At present, China has become a large PCB producer in the world, and it is also one of the regions that can provide large PCB production capacity and the most complete product types in the world. On the whole, despite the large number of local PCB enterprises, there is still a certain gap between their enterprise scale and technical level and that of foreign-funded enterprises that have set up branches in the domestic mainland, and their competitiveness is slightly weak.
From 2008 to 2016, the output value of the domestic PCB industry increased from US $15.037 billion to US $27.24 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.7%, far exceeding the global overall growth rate of 2.53%. In 2008, the financial crisis had a great impact on the global PCB industry, and the domestic PCB industry was not spared. However, in the context of the global PCB industry transferring to China, the domestic PCB industry recovered comprehensively after 2009, and maintained a rapid growth trend as a whole.
At present, a PCB industry cluster belt with Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta as the core regions has been formed in China. In 2016, there were about 1880 domestic PCB industry enterprises, mainly distributed in the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and the Bohai Rim. The PCB output in the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta accounted for about 90% of the total output in the mainland. PCB production capacity in central and western regions has also expanded rapidly in recent years. In recent years, with the rise of labor costs in coastal areas, some PCB enterprises began to move their production capacity from the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta to cities in the central and western regions with better basic conditions, such as Huangshi in Hubei, Guangde in Anhui, Suining in Sichuan, etc. The Pearl River Delta region and the Yangtze River Delta region use their advantages in talent, economy and industrial chain to develop high-end products and high value-added products. Due to the inward migration of PCB enterprises, the central and western regions will gradually become an important base of China's PCB industry.
Communication electronics, consumer electronics and computer fields have become the three major application fields of PCB. In the 21st century, the popularity of personal computers has driven the development of PCB products in the computer field. Since 2008, smart phones have gradually become the main driving force for the development of the printed circuit board industry. The proportion of PCB output value in the communication and electronics field has increased from 22.18% in 2009 to 27.31% in 2016, becoming the fastest growing field of PCB applications. In the future, with the emerging demand in downstream fields such as automotive electronics, wearable devices, industrial control, and medical devices, the PCB industry will usher in a new growth point. From 2008 to 2016, the domestic PCB output value increased from US $15.04 billion to US $27.24 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.7%, higher than the global average growth level. In the future, the output value of domestic PCB is expected to continue to grow. It is predicted that the output value of domestic PCB industry will increase from 27.24 billion dollars in 2016 to 35.47 billion dollars in 2022, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5%.
